From graphic designer to so much more

When I first came across the advertisement in the newspaper for a Student Graphic Design Intern at Royal Gazette (RG) I knew that it was my calling. Although I am studying marketing at Acadia University, I still have a passion for creativity and design. I threw together some of my work as well as created a few more designs to showcase my skills, and after about a week or two of adding to my portfolio I completed it just in time for my interview. I left the interview feeling pretty confident and turns out I was offered the position!

I was placed at Bermuda.com, a subsidiary of RG. I knew that they had a magazine for tourists as well as a website to help tourists get around the island, so I was feeling excited going into it. My first day was spent introducing myself to new people, getting a tour around the building and starting a few written editorials for the magazine. Little did I know it was going to be much more than that!

Some really fun highlights are:

-Who doesn’t love free food!? I had the opportunity to visit local restaurants and food trucks to take pictures of their most exquisite food and drinks. Then of course, eat the food.

-Take pictures of the official licensee of the America’s Cup Handbags! Here’s an article posted on royal gazette with some of my photography http://www.royalgazette.com/lifestyle/article/20160920/bags-of-talent

- Its not every day you get the chance to take pictures of super expensive items! How about a pair of DITA Mach Four Sunglasses worth over $1,000? Or, how a $300,000+ yacht? Yeah, I did both!

- Also I visited the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSoA) Musesm to take pictures of the Biennial art showcase as well as the Bermudian art __. Talk about inspiration.

-Designed online Ad’s for Bermuda.com and Bermuda Directory to go on the The Royal Gazette website and Nothing to do in Bermuda page.

-Upload content onto their website from the ‘back-end’

-Manage the social media platforms of the @Bermudadotcom Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.

So in the end, although I applied for a position in graphic design, I was introduced to so many new things, new people and new experiences. Absolutely worthwhile!

Here are just a few pictures of my work while at Bermuda.com:
